O CANYONING

O Canyoning

Canyoning

Canyoning is the progressive scanning of a river, crossing vertical obstacles and exploring the surrounding environment through various techniques and equipment, allowing its practitioners to have a permanent contact with nature.

The excitement and adrenaline are the main attraction for the practice of exploring canyons, constantly being surprised by new and unexpected situations, but that simultaneously convey an inexplicable sense of freedom and harmony with nature.

Canyoning is an extremely safe sport, which uses high-tech equipment and performance and is a low impact activity when in contact with the natural environment, with minimal interference with these sites.

In Madeira, canyoning began in late 1989 by a French group, led by Frederic Feu, connected to a company named Atalanta, who took the multiple lines of existing water on the island for the pratice of this sport.

Today there are many courses available on the island and particularly in the municipality of Calheta, through some of its streams.

Since August 2006, the compnay Canyoning Madeira led by Nuno Freitas pioneered the dissemination of existing routes on the island of Madeira to the public in general, contributed to its internationalization.
