A ilha da Madeira é considerada por muitos como um dos melhores locais para a prática do Surf na Europa, frequentemente são realizados encontros internacionais, e o Jardim do Mar ganhou uma dimensão diferente neste panorama, com a realização do Campeonato de Surf, RED BULL WAVE CHALLENGE 2000 e com o Campeonato Mundial de Surfing 2001, que tem vindo a difundir o nome desta freguesia pelos quatro cantos do globo.
Conhecida como o paraíso dos surfistas, é possível durante quase todo o ano quer no Jardim do Mar quer na vizinha freguesia do Paul do Mar, assistir às acrobacias dos muitos surfistas que por ali passam e que têm a possibilidade de desafiar as ondas alterosas, consideradas as melhores da Europa.

Die Insel Madeira wird von vielen als einer der besten Surfplätze innerhalb Europas betrachtet und ist regelmäßig Schauplatz internationaler Wettkämpfe.
